Incorporated in 1991, Northern Land Use Research Alaska, LLC. (NLURA), formerly known as Northern Land Use Research, Inc. (NLUR), has evolved into the largest cultural resource consulting firm in Alaska. We provide all cultural resource management services related to compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and implementing regulations (36 CFR 800); the Alaska Historic Preservation Act (AHPA); environmental studies required under National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC); and Section 110 of the NHPA. We focus on providing archaeological compliance and research for federal and state agencies, Alaska Native corporations, private sector clients, local governments, and non-profit organizations. We have experience consulting with these entities and guiding federally funded, licensed, or permitted projects through the cultural resource permitting process.

Firm ProfileNLURA has completed over 450 projects in Alaska handling every aspect of the Section 106 process related to the identification, evaluation, assessment, and treatment/mitigation of cultural resources. Our work ranges from archaeological surveys of historic and prehistoric sites to historic property documentation and evaluations, subsistence studies, architectural recordation (HABS/HAER), site excavation, and historic research. We have provided cultural resource support and written appropriate sections of many Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), and FERC Filings. We have developed Memoranda of Agreement (MOA), Programmatic Agreements (PA), and Cultural Resource Management Plans (CRMP).
